A smart suitcase that follows you around like a puppy

14 Jan

A suitcase that follows its owner around like a puppy could be hitting the market after an Israeli robotics company created a prototype aimed at making luggage hands-free.

Controlled via a smartphone app, a camera sensor and Bluetooth technology work in tandem to locate the owner and trail by their side.

The suitcase works on flat surfaces and could come in handy in environments such as an airport or hotel lobby.

Though in the early testing phases, NUA Robotics says it hopes to bring its smart suitcase to the market in about a year, reports Mashable.

Proximity detection is meant to help the suitcase avoid obstacles, while USB ports can power portable devices like smartphones and tablets.

Other features include an anti-theft alarm, location tracking, and built-in scale that can tell users if they’ve packed over the weight limit.

Data is sent in real-time to smartphones.

The concept of a hands-free suitcase is the latest expansion on luggage tracking technology, which has seen the popularity of devices like the Trakdot, a small device placed inside the checked baggage which sends owners SMS messages or email alerts on its whereabouts when the plane touches down.

The Bluesmart is also designed as a smart carry-on suitcase with built-in GPS location tracking, scale, automatic digital lock and distance alerts if forgetful owners end up leaving them behind.

Samsung to manufacture Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 mobile chips

14 Jan

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Thursday it will mass produce Qualcomm Inc's new Snapdragon 820 mobile processors, in a major boost for the South Korean tech giant's contract manufacturing business.

Samsung said the chips used its 14-nanometre manufacturing process which it also used to make its own Exynos processors. They would be in products in the first half of the year, Samsung added in a statement, without revealing the value of the contract.

The world's top maker of memory chips has been trying to grow its processor business to diversify its revenue stream. It is growing more reliant on components as rivals such as Apple Inc and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd eat into its share of the smartphone market and pressure margins.

Samsung said the 14-nanometre technology cut power consumption by 15 per cent and increased processing speed by up to 15 per cent.

Samsung Galaxy S6 teardown suggests deeper loss for chip supplier Qualcomm

The firm added Nvidia Corp as a foundry client last year, while South Korea's Electronic Times has reported that Samsung would start making chips for Advanced Micro Devices Inc this year as well.

The Electronic Times also reported last year that Samsung would use the Snapdragon 820 chips for some of its new flagship Galaxy S7 smartphones that will launch this year.

Virtual reality set to transform filmmaking

Chris Milk stepped onto a TED Conference stage and took the audience on an awe-inducing trip into the future of movies. While much of the early attention on virtual reality has focused on use of the immersive technology in video games, Milk and his US startup Vrse are using it to transform storytelling and filmgoing. "We have just started to scratch the surface of the true power of virtual reality," Milk said. "It's not a video game peripheral. It connects humans to other humans in a profound way... I think virtual reality has the potential to actually change the world." He had everyone in the Vancouver audience at TED , which ended Friday, hold Google Cardboard viewers to their eyes for what was billed as the world's collective virtual reality experience. Explained: Camera Improvements in the New HTC 10

With the HTC 10, the Taiwanese company is promising to undo the past wrongs in the cameras of its previous flagship phones. The camera has long a weak point in HTC devices. At first, HTC sacrificed image resolution in the M8 and made the size of individual pixels larger to capture more light (what HTC called Ultrapixel). But the resulting 4 megapixel images were often fuzzy, especially when cropped or enlarged. To fix the issue, in its next flagship - the M9 - HTC went with smaller individual pixels in a 20-megapixel camera last year, but it still underperformed in extreme situations, such as indoors and close-ups. In the HTC 10, the company attempts to strike a balance with larger individual pixels (1.55µm), but not as large as before and a 12 megapixel sensor in its camera coupled with a ƒ/1.8 lens. HTC accepts that in the imaging performance in the M9 was not up to the kind of spec of what they really like to see in a flagship. HTC is giving a slight boost to the selfi...
