Gmail's New Scanning Feature to Prevent Leak of Confidential Data

After introducing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) service last year,Google last month launched Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for Gmail that can now even read the email attachments for better security. This will prevent employees to leak company's sensitive information to those who shouldn't have it. The feature is only for paid Google Apps for Work Unlimited customers. While for email texts there is DLP, for attachments Google has introduced OCR. OCR can now analyse common image types and search for data such as social security numbers or passwords. The technology can now scan the document and match keywords (for instance a secret project's codename) to the admin's approved blacklist. "Sensitive information can reside not just in text documents, but in scanned copies and images as well. With the new OCR enhancement, DLP policies can now analyse common image types, and extract text for policy evaluation," says Google in a blog post. Google has also launche...

BlackBerry Priv Gets Camera, Keyboard, and Launcher App Updates

BlackBerry last week started rolling out several app updates for the BlackBerry Launcher, BlackBerry Keyboard, and BlackBerry Camera via Google Play. It is worth mentioning that all these updates are only for the company's latest Android smartphone - the BlackBerry Priv. In the camera department , BlackBerry Priv as a part of the camera update v1.0.0.3803 gets the ability to record videos in slow motion (120 frames per second) function, which can play back at 30fps. The option is placed under the camera's "Mode" section. Audio however, is not enabled for slow motion for now. The app also receives improved selfie stick compatibility along with some general stability and performance improvements. The BlackBerry Keyboard v1.2.0.5147 for the Priv smartphone now includes better predictive typing with more accuracy and control, adds Michael C. from BlackBerry Research In Motion (RIM) team in a blog post. In addition, the predictive typing can now also learn words wi...

Android N's Revamped Interface Spotted in Mock-Ups, Official Video

Soon after the first purported screenshots from Google's next Android OS version made rounds on the Internet, we have more on our table offering new details about  Android N . In the meanwhile, Google has released a video for its Maps app that may have revealed a major design change in the latest version of the operating system - no app drawer. Getting to the official video, the Google Maps Twitter handle may just have given the world the first look at Android N. In a video shared last week detailing new features of Google Maps, the search giant shows what appears to be a Nexus 6P smartphone that's missing an app drawer on its home screen. Instead, the Nexus 6P's home screen in the video shows the Dialler, Contacts, and Camera apps in the bottom dock, apart from apps for Search, Chrome, Maps, Photos, and Hangouts. If true, the revamp flies in the face of recent changes made by Google in Marshmallow, which brought improved search and listing options for the app...

Apple wants to talk and settle fight with FBI over iPhone encryption

Apple wants a "conversation" to help settle a standoff with US law enforcement over accessing an encrypted iPhone, according to testimony prepared for a congressional hearing. In a statement prepared for the Tuesday hearing, Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell said the public should understand that "encryption is a good thing, a necessary thing" even if it makes the work of law enforcement more difficult. Apple and FBI are locked in battle over a warrant seeking to force the technology company to help unlock the iPhone used by one of the shooters in December's San Bernardino attacks. Apple's refusal has set off an intense political debate about encrypted devices that provide "keys" only to users. In his remarks, Sewell said Apple has been stepping up its encryption over the past few years. "As attacks on our customers' data become increasingly sophisticated, the tools we use to defend against them must get stronger too," he said....

Unlocking iPhone would leave millions of users exposed: Apple

Unlocking an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters would leave hundreds of millions of Apple Inc device owners vulnerable to cybercriminals and other hackers, the company's top lawyer is expected to tell US lawmakers on Tuesday. In written testimony to the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee released on Monday, Apple General Counsel Bruce Sewell reiterated the tech giant's stance that the FBI's request to help access the phone "would set a dangerous precedent for government intrusion on the privacy and safety of its citizens." The government sought access to the phone in the Brooklyn case in October, months before a judge in California ordered Apple to take special measures to give the government access to the phone used by one of the shooters in the San Bernardino, California, attacks.

Obama launches 'take your child to lab' day to encourage kids to pursue STEM fields

President Barack Obama is launching a version of "take your child to work day" that's focused on America's science laboratories instead of its corporate workspaces. It's part of Obama's effort to encourage young people, especially girls and minorities, to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. More than 50 national labs in 20 states are opening their doors this coming week to approximately 5,000 elementary, middle and high school students to help spark interest by exposing them to the scientists, engineers and lab employees who carry out important work and research at facilities in their communities. The students, including from communities aligned with Obama's "My Brother's Keeper" initiative, will participate in mentoring sessions, hands-on experiments and other activities. My Brother's Keeper is a public-private initiative started by Obama to help boys and young men of color stay on the right pa...

At this unmanned store, customers only need a smartphone to make purchases

It was a chaotic, late-night scramble to buy baby food with a screaming toddler in the backseat that gave Robert Ilijason the idea to open Sweden's first unstaffed convenience store. Home alone with his hungry son, Ilijason had dropped the last baby food jar on the floor, and had to drive 20 minutes from the small town of Viken in southern Sweden to find a supermarket that was open. Now the 39-year-old IT specialist runs a 24-hour shop with no cashier. Customers simply use their cellphones to unlock the door with a swipe of the finger and scan their purchases. All they need to do is to register for the service and download an app. They get charged for their purchases in a monthly invoice. The shop has basics like milk, bread, sugar, canned food, diapers and other products that you expect to find in a small convenience store. It doesn't have tobacco or medical drugs because of the risk of theft. Alcohol cannot be sold in convenience stores in Sweden. "My ambition is t...

Facebook fined $109,000 for being unclear on how it uses people's data

A German court has fined Facebook 100,000 euros ($109,000) for refusing to follow an order to adequately inform users about how it was using their intellectual property, a consumer group said on Monday. News of the ruling followed a visit last week by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in which he mounted a charm offensive in the face of increasing antipathy in Germany towards the world's biggest social media network prompted by fears for data protection. The Berlin regional court ruled that Facebook had not adequately changed the wording of a clause on intellectual property in its terms and conditions after a complaint was filed by the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (VZBV). "Facebook is persistently trying to evade consumer laws in Germany and Europe," VZBV head Klaus Mueller said in a statement. "Companies must implement judicial decisions and can't simply sit them out." A spokeswoman for the Berlin court confirmed the ruling. A German court o...

Federal judge backs Apple; says government can't force it to unlock iPhone

The US government cannot force Apple Inc to unlock an iPhone in a New York drug case, a federal judge in Brooklyn said on Monday, a ruling that bolsters the company's arguments in its landmark legal showdown with the Justice Department over encryption and privacy. The government sought access to the phone in the Brooklyn case in October, months before a judge in California ordered Apple to take special measures to give the government access to the phone used by one of the shooters in the San Bernardino, California, attacks. US Magistrate Judge James Orenstein in Brooklyn ruled that he did not have the legal authority to order Apple to disable the security of an iPhone that was seized during a drug investigation. His ruling echoed many of the arguments that Apple has made in the San Bernardino case, particularly his finding that a 1789 law called the All Writs Act cannot be used to force Apple to open the phone. Orenstein also found that Apple was largely exempt from complying wi...

Yahoo may write down goodwill value of Tumblr

Yahoo Inc said it may have to write down the goodwill value of Tumblr , more than two years after the web pioneer spent $1.1 billion to buy the microblogging site. Yahoo said earlier in the month it took a $230 million impairment charge related to Tumblr and was considering strategic alternatives for its core internet business. "It is reasonably possible that changes in judgments ... could cause the company to consider some portion or all of the remaining goodwill of the Tumblr reporting unit to become impaired," Yahoo said in a regulatory filing on Monday. The deal for Tumblr was then seen as a bold bet by Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer to revitalise the company by co-opting a Web property with strong visitor traffic but little revenue. Yahoo said on Friday it would take pretax charges of $64 million to $78 million, mostly in the first quarter of 2016, due to job cuts and other restructuring moves. Of the total, $40 million to $48 million would be for severance pa...

Google takes some responsibility after self-driving car hits bus in minor crash

Alphabet Inc's Google said on Monday it bears "some responsibility" after one of its self-driving cars struck a municipal bus in a minor crash earlier this month. The crash may be the first case of one of its autonomous cars hitting another vehicle and the fault of the self-driving car. The Mountain View, California-based internet search leader said it made changes to its software after the crash to avoid future incidents. In a Feb. 23 report filed with California regulators, Google said the crash took place in Mountain View on Feb. 14 when a self-driving Lexus RX450h sought to get around some sandbags in a wide lane. Google said in the filing the autonomous vehicle was travelling at less than 2 miles per hour, while the bus was moving at about 15 miles per hour. The vehicle and the test driver "believed the bus would slow or allow the Google (autonomous vehicle) to continue," it said. But three seconds later, as the Google car in autonomous mode re-entered...

Apple now expected to launch new 4-inch iPhone on March 21

Contrary to earlier speculations, the much looked forward to Apple product launch event is now expected to be held almost a week later on March 21. The Apple event was earlier speculated to be held on March 15, however, latest reports hint at the later date when the next iteration of the iPhone 5 could be unveiled, Re/code notes. For long, the tech giant has been rumoured to be working on an iPhone 5se - new 4-inch version of the iPhone 5s- crafted especially for consumers seeking a faster device without upgrading to the larger screen size present on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Further reports also hint that Apple might just drop the '5' from the new device and instead call it simply the ' iPhone se '. This would mark a shift from Apple's traditional nomenclature for its smartphones which contain a number. Other than the new iPhone, Apple is also likely to take the wraps off its new iPad Air tablet at the event. It is also speculated that a new iPad Pro with a 9....
