Asus ZenFone 3 Series to Bear Fingerprint Sensors, Launch in May.

A new report from Taiwan claims that Asus may pack fingerprint scanners in its ZenFone 3 series of smartphones that are expected to launch next year.
Digitimes, citing Taiwan-based supply chain firms, adds that the third-generation of ZenFone smartphones will be the company's first set of devices featuring fingerprint recognition technology and are slated for May-June 2016 release. Considering that Asus in past launched the ZenFone and ZenFone 2 series in early 2014 and the first-half of 2015 respectively, we can expect the Zenfone 3 devices to launch in H1 2016.

The report claims that Asus may adopt fingerprint recognition solutions developed by Taiwan-based Elan Microelectronics and China-based Goodix for its ZenFone 3 series. "As Goodix, Elan, and other Taiwan-based IC design house, such as Egis Technology and FocalTech Systems, have stepped up development of fingerprint recognition sensors, prices for such ICs have been dropping, and may fall to US$5 per IC in 2016," the sources added.

The report also suggests that Asus is looking to expand its ZenFone series of smartphones to markets such as Myanmar, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Nigeria next year. The Taiwanese handset maker has so far seen tremendous response for the ZenFone range from markets in the Southeast Asia such as India, while it has also done well in Brazil, Russia, and Taiwan markets.

The sources however add that Asus may face stiff competition from China-based handset makers such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Oppo, Vivo, Meizu, Coolpad, ZTE, and TCL in emerging markets including India.

Previously, Asus CEO Jonney Shih confirmed that the new line of ZenFone smartphones will include USB Type-C ports. So far, only select Android smartphones such as OnePlus 2, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6P feature USB Type-C ports. The Nokia N1 tablet apart from the new Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL also use the same technology.

Flexible Camera Developed That Can Be Wrapped Around Objects

A team led by an Indian-origin professor at Columbia University has created a novel sheet camera that can be wrapped around everyday objects to capture images that cannot be taken with one or more conventional cameras. "Cameras today capture the world from essentially a single point in space. While the camera industry has made remarkable progress in shrinking the camera to a tiny device with ever increasing imaging quality, we are exploring a radically different approach to imaging," said Shree K Nayar, computer science professor at Columbia University. Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) Leaked in Press Images

The anticipated successor to the popular Samsung Galaxy J1, tipped to be called the Galaxy J1 (2016), has once again been leaked in images on the Web. While in the previous leaks we have seen the unannounced smartphone in its Black colour variant, the new leaked image shows the handset in two additional colour variants. The image tweeted by @evleaks on Monday shows the Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) smartphone in Gold and White colour variants. The design of the handset also fall in line with the models leaked in images previously. It is worth mentioning that the screen bezel seen in the image stay black in all the three colour variants. The smartphone is seen featuring a physical home button, along with a multi-window, and a back capacitive button on either side. At the back, the smartphone sports a camera at the centre with a LED flash and a speaker on either sides. Samsung is yet to announce the smartphone.
