Tesla Motors says worldwide orders for its new lower-priced Model 3 electric car have hit 325,000. CEO Elon Musk says on Twitter Thursday that the number is still rising. Customers must put down $1,000 to order the cars, which start at $35,000 and have a range of 350 kms per charge. The deposits are refundable. The Palo Alto, California, company started taking orders March 31, shortly before Musk unveiled the car in Los Angeles. It's not scheduled to go on sale until late next year. The number of orders is unprecedented when compared with electric car sales worldwide. Nissan says it has sold 211,000 electric Leafs since distribution began in late 2010. Tesla has sold a total of 110,000 electric cars since it started doing business in 2008. Over 325k cars or ~$14B in preorders in first week. With the world's thinnest laptop, HP also unveiled its brand new logo which is actually an old logo that the company never used. HP's new logo is just four minimalist slashes creating the 'HP' mark instead of a fully spelled 'Hewlett Packard' or 'hp'. The same logo first surfaced online in a 2011 brand redesign study released by Moving Brands which HP had hired to develop a new logo and brand identity, a report on The Verge notes. Back then the company had decided against the logo. Five years later, as the company has split into two, the new minimalist logo seems more befitting with the new-age consumer brand. There has been much buzz about WhatsApp rolling out full end-to-end encryption for its billion plus users around the world. This means that all WhatsApp messages will now be accessible only to the sender and recipient, and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp. While this development has privacy advocates and human rights pleased, security agencies are concerned that it could be misused by anti- national elements for achieving their nefarious designs. Apple also uses end-to-end encryption for its iMessage service but WhatsApp's user numbers are far greater than that of iMessage (which is limited to iPhones) and therefore the recent changes affect a larger set of users. If early Mars was as barren and cold as it is today then the bombardment of the Red Planet some four billion years ago by comets and asteroids may have made its climate more conducive to life, according to a study. The impacts would have produced regional hydrothermal systems on Mars similar to those in Yellowstone National Park, which today harbour chemically powered microbes, some of which can survive boiling in hot springs or inhabiting water acidic enough to dissolve iron nails, said study co-author Stephen Mojzsis from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Scientists have long known there was once running water on Mars, as evidenced by ancient river valleys, deltas and parts of lake beds, Mojzsis added.
